Developing mathematicians of the future

Maths enables pupils to develop independence, confidence and aspirational learners who are able to see and make connections between the different mathematical concepts and the wider world enabled through deep learning and challenges for all groups of pupils. Children will be able to confidently solve problems, reason mathematically and successfully perform investigations across the curriculum.

At our school, we ensure high standards in maths through a progressive, whole-school curriculum adapted to meet the needs of mixed-age classes. Teaching is structured around the White Rose Maths scheme, allowing concepts to be taught in small, carefully sequenced steps with full curriculum coverage; teachers also use their professional judgement to adapt these to meet the needs of their class. Lessons are further strengthened using resources such as NCETM and Deepening Understanding to provide challenge and depth. Daily arithmetic sessions, taught separately from maths lessons, support fluency, reasoning, recall, and times table knowledge.

In EYFS, mathematics is taught through play, exploration, and practical experiences that help children develop a secure foundation in number and numerical patterns. Children are supported to count confidently, understand quantities, recognise numbers, and explore shapes, measures, and patterns through everyday activities. Learning is rooted in real-life contexts and rich talk, allowing children to reason, problem-solve, and explain their thinking. Adults model mathematical language and carefully scaffold learning so that all children develop confidence, curiosity, and enjoyment in mathematics.

Timestable Badges

At our school, we celebrate progress and achievement in times tables through a structured rewards system. Children can earn badges as they master tables:

  • Bronze: 2, 5, 10

  • Silver: 3, 4, 8

  • Gold: 6, 7, 9

  • Platinum: Full 12×12

  • Triple Star: 10×10 grid in under 2:15 seconds

  • Diamond: Year 3 challenge

  • Emerald: Year 4 challenge

  • Sapphire: Year 5 challenge
